EAL (English as an Additional Language)

The Olive School Sailing at Rutland Water

Our team of qualified English language teachers supports learners who speak other languages at home. Through small group sessions, one-on-one coaching, and in-class help, we guide pupils in improving their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English.

This support helps every child feel confident in class, participate fully in school life, and achieve their academic goals across all subjects.

We recommend that pupils bring a simple English-to-local language (e.g. Luganda) bilingual paper dictionary to school. This is helpful for improving vocabulary and understanding classroom instructions.

Electronic translators are not essential at primary level. If you choose to purchase one, please ensure it's basic and used only during lessons — not in tests or exams.
During school assessments, pupils are only permitted to use a basic paper dictionary — not a digital device. This helps maintain fairness and focuses on learning, not just translation.

Dictionaries should contain simple word-for-word translations only, with no pictures, definitions, or internet features. Teachers will give guidance before each test where necessary.
